About

THE NAME

What is “Hicabai”?

It means HORSE (of course!)

It comes from the Chibcha language, by the Huetar tribe. The Huetars were one of the most important and powerful indigineous groups in pre-Columbian Costa Rica.

For the Huetar tribe, the connection with horses was vital because it represents a fusion of their ancestral identity with the colonial “sabanero” (cowboy) culture.

As expert warriors, craftsmen, weavers and agriculturists, the Huetar tribe historically relied on horses not just for transportation through mountainous terrain, but as spiritual and economic partners; with horses symbolizing the tribe´s resilience.
